Addiction Issues
Chinese medicine can assist in the withdrawal process from a wide range of substances including nicotine, alcohol, prescription medication and various recreational drugs.
Withdrawal from any addictive substance involves a level of mental & physical discomfort. Mentally this can manifest as anger, irritability, depression, anxiety, insomnia, agitation and withdrawal. The physical symptoms can include headaches, sweating, palpitations, dizziness, fatigue, hot & cold flushes, and tremors.
Withdrawal disrupts the natural flow of energy(Qi) and blood in the body. Acupuncture is a gentle and effective way of re-establishing this energy flow to calm the mind and reduce physical discomfort. Acupuncture also promotes the release of endorphins, the bodies natural pain killers which induce a deep state of relaxation and help to ward off cravings. A study undertaken in 1979 in Hong Kong and London showed that “endorphin concentrations were raised by acupuncture in heroin dependant persons, resulting in successful suppression of withdrawal symptoms”(Culiton RD & others. Overview of substance abuse acupuncture treatment research. Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 1996).
Any underlying issues of energetic depletion or imbalance also need to be addressed. Chronic abuse of substances such as drugs and alcohol gradually deplete the bodies “Yin”. In Chinese medicine yin relates to the blood and vital fluids that nourish the body and organs. If yin is severely depleted symptoms of heat, internal restlessness and exhaustion result. Specific herbs are used to nourish the blood/yin-fluids, clear any heat and re-balance the system.
After an initial consultation a treatment strategy will be outlined to assist in withdrawal and recovery.
