Depression
Depression can be described as a persistent low mood.
It can be triggered by stress, pain, illness, abuse of alcohol/drugs, poor diet, shock, blood loss and hormonal fluctuations. Symptoms of depression can include excessive weepiness, pessimism, feelings of guilt, lack of energy, poor concentration, indecision, changes in appetite and sleep patterns, restlessness, low libido, social withdrawal and perhaps even thoughts of suicide.
People with depression feel “stuck” and unable to change their circumstances. In Chinese medicine this is due to an obstruction of the flow of energy(Qi) in the body. Acupuncture promotes this flow of energy(Qi) through the body, which naturally eases the symptoms of depression. Particular acupuncture points are used to lift the mood and clear the spirit. It is essential that the underlying mechanism of the depression is dealt with and this varies between individuals. CHinese herbs are used to help harmonise any under-lying imbalances in Yin-Yang, blood-fluids and organ physiology.
The naturally-occurring amino-acid L-Tryptophan(5HTP) is also showing promising results. Research suggests that "taking 200mg daily of 5HTP can reduce symptoms of depression up to 50% without any reported side effects”(Costa & Greengard, 1984. Frontiers in Biochemical and Pharmacological Research in Depression). 5HTP is used in the form of the herb Han Shou Cao and has the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier to form serotonin in the central nervous system. Serotonin plays a significant role in the regulation of anxiety and depression as well as governing appetite and sleep patterns.
Chinese medicine is ideal for those who wish to manage their depression naturally.
