Endometriosis

Endometriosis involves functional uterine tissue occurring outside the uterus.

It is most commonly found in the the pelvic cavity(eg fallopian tubes, bowel). Because the function of uterine tissue is to shed at the period time, this tissue does so but in the wrong place causing a build up of blood in the pelvic cavity.

Symptoms include varying degrees of cyclical pelvic pain, irregular periods, lower back pain, bloating and infertility. In Chinese medicine endometriosis is related to obstruction of the blood in the pelvic cavity.

Acupuncture promotes the smooth flow of energy(Qi) and blood through the body and is associated with the release of endorphins which reduce pain and inflammation naturally. Specific acupuncture points and cupping are used on the abdomen to invigorate the blood in the pelvic cavity and uterus and warm the blood.

Herbal supplements are used to nourish and invigorate the blood flow as well as address any underlying imbalances in Yin/Yang.

A nutritional diet, regular exercise and stress management plays an important role in managing endometriosis.
