Hay Fever
Hay-fever is associated with an increase in sensitivity of the nasal passage, causing symptoms of runny nose, nasal congestion, itching watery eyes and sneezing.
In Chinese medicine, hay-fever is regarded as a weakness of the constitution affecting the lungs, digestive system & kidneys with episodic invasion of wind in the spring time.
Acute symptoms are addressed with high doses of strong dispersing herbs that act to inhibit allergic response. Specific acupuncture points are used to open the nose, clear the sinuses and eliminate phlegm. Acupuncture in the acute phase is performed 2-3 times a week or up to daily in severe cases. Once the acute symptoms have resolved, strengthening the constitution and immune system is vital. Constitutional treatment in the 2-3 month period leading up to hay-fever season is ideal to prevent acute symptoms. Special consideration to diet is important as certain foods are known to exacerbate congestion and phlegm.
Acupuncture is ideal for those who wish to manage their hay-fever naturally.
