Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS) commonly manifests with altering states of digestive dysfunction including constipation, diarrhoea and bloating. In many cases diarrhoea or constipation will predominate with less frequent episodes of the other. Emotional stress and eating tend to trigger IBS symptoms. In western physiology stress appears to induce a hypertonicity of the gut wall, where the nerves overact and cause spasm.
In Chinese medicine, IBS relates to energy(Qi) and blood obstruction that is accompanied by different degrees of digestive weakness. A person who suffers constipation type IBS has Qi and blood obstruction to the bowel with relatively strong digestive capacity. A person who suffers diarrhoea type IBS has Qi & blood obstruction with weaker digestive capacity.
Treatment involves 2 components, the psychological aspect(stress and emotions) and the physiological aspect(digestive function). Specific acupuncture points are used to regulate the flow of energy(Qi) through the body and bowel to relieve obstruction, pain and bloating. Points are then chosen to calm the mind and reduce stress, allowing the patient to fall into a deep state of relaxation. Herbal medicine is used to strengthen and regulate digestive function, reduce inflammation and sedate the mind. Treatment is weekly until proper digestive function and emotional stability is achieved.
Diet and lifestyle issues may need to be addressed if there are factors that are disrupting normal bowel function. Regular stress management techniques are helpful in most cases.
