Labour induction
Acupuncture provides a safe, natural and effective means to induce labour.
“Research suggests that acupuncture preformed after a woman’s due date supports cervical ripening at term and shortens the time interval between the woman’s expected due date and the actual time of delivery”(The Essential Guide to Acupuncture in Pregnancy & Childbirth, Betts, 2006, p.150).
Specific acupuncture points are used which invigorate the blood flow, relax the tendons, aid cervical ripening and promote the baby’s descent.
Induction is usually performed up to 3 days before a medical induction is planned. Before this time pre-birth acupuncture is used to prepare the body(see pre-birth acupuncture).
