Morning sickness
“Morning sickness” refers to nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. It is thought to be caused by hormonal fluctuations, stress, fatigue and neurological changes(The Essential Guide to Acupuncture in Pregnancy & Childbirth, Betts).
In Chinese medicine philosophy, pregnancy causes a disruption in the natural descent of stomach energy(Qi) due to a build up & obstruction of blood in the uterus. Acupuncture and acupressure promote the natural flow of energy(Qi) in body and through its effect on the nervous system, redirects this energy back down to settle nausea.
The effectiveness of acupressure to the acupuncture point PC6 has been repeatedly confirmed with numerous controlled trials(Dundee JW et al. PC6 acupressure reduces morning sickness. Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, 1988, 81(8):456-457).
Herbs are often difficult to take during this sensitive time so acupuncture and acupressure is the treatment of choice. If dehydration is an issue, a list of common foods is given to help replenish the fluids of the stomach. Treatments for morning sickness are done 1-2 times weekly but can be done daily when severe.
Acupuncture is relatively painless, side effect free and provides a fantastic alternative to anti-emetic mediation.
