Period Pain (Dysmenorrhea)

Dysmenorrhea is associated with excessive contraction and inflammation of the uterine tissue during menstruation. Conditions such as endometriosis, ectopic pregnancy and uterine cysts can induce dysmenorrhoea.

In Chinese medicine, pain during menstruation indicates a relative stagnation of energy(Qi) & blood in the uterus. Stagnation of the blood is often felt as sharp menstrual cramps and clotty menstrual flow.

Acupuncture helps to re-establish the blood-flow through the uterus to reduce pain. “Studies have indicated that acupuncture in patients with dysmenorrhea was associated with improvements in pain and quality of life”(Witt CM, Reinhold T, Brinkhaus B, Roll S, Jena S, Willich SN, 2008: Acupuncture in patients with dysmenorrhea: a randomised study on clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness in usual care”, Am. J. Obstet. Gynecol. 198(2): 166e1-8).

Specific herbs are used to nourish and invigorate the blood flow, regulate the menstruation, reduce pain and relieve emotional stress.

Any underlying imbalances of Yin/Yang and organ dysfunction are addressed. Patients are advised to eat a balanced diet, get adequate rest and avoid stress to help reduce inflammation.
