Pre-birth Acupuncture
“Recent research has found that weekly prebirth acupuncture sessions reduce mean labour time by up to 2 hours” (The Essential guide to Acupuncture in Pregnancy & Childbirth, Betts).
Pre-birth acupuncture is used from week 37 to delivery and is a safe and effective method of loosening the ligaments and preparing the body for birth.
Feedback from midwives has suggested that the clinically relevant benefits of pre-birth acupuncture include:
- reduction in medical induction rates
- reduction in women receiving epidurals
- reduction in emergency caesarean sections and an increase in normal vaginal births.
(Betts, Acupuncture for pregnancy & childbirth seminar, Melbourne, 2008.)
Acupuncture is also very useful during pregnancy to address any common complications such as: lower back pain, haemorrhoids, fear & anxiety, insomnia, heartburn, hypertension, oedema, varicose veins, breech position of baby.
