Premenstrual tension(PMT)
Premenstrual tension is caused by fluctuating hormone levels that occur 7-10 days before the period.
Symptoms include irritability, agitation, impulsiveness, depression, stress, anger, vagueness, fatigue, swollen & tender breasts, fluid retention, bloating, constipation/diarrhoea, headaches and lower back pain.
In Chinese medicine PMT represents a relative obstruction in the energy(Qi) flow leading up to the period. Treatment involves using specific acupuncture points to invigorate this flow of energy(Qi), regulate the hormone levels and calm the mind to reduce stress.
Research into the use of acupuncture for PMT is promising, in a controlled trial in 1992, “the majority of patients receiving acupuncture gained relief from (PMT) symptoms with no recurrence in the six-month follow-up”(Li J et al. Treatment of 108 cases of premenstrual tension by head-acupuncture. Chinese Acupuncture & Moxibustion, 1992, 12(3):245-246).
Herbal medicine is often used to support the energy moving process as well as addressing any severe and debilitating symptoms.
Avoidance of caffeine, alcohol and other stimulants is recommended.
